With two open calls, the Carlsberg Foundation is inviting researchers and professional communicators to apply for funding for science communication. The funds are being offered through Carlsberg Mindelegat, which is open to researchers with an affiliation to a Danish research institution, and the Science Communication instrument, which is open to professional communicators. The application deadline is 1 March 2024.

The Carlsberg Foundation wants to stimulate general interest in and knowledge of science and its importance in Denmark. On that basis, the Foundation is calling for applications for funding to make scientific results and issues freely available to the Danes with a view to strengthening public conversation and increasing the participation of researchers in the public debate. With this funding, the Foundation also wishes to promote relationships and collaboration between researchers and professional communicators.

The funds, which are being offered through Carlsberg Mindelegat and the Science Communication instrument, are advertised in open competition with an application deadline of 1 March 2024.

While Carlsberg Mindelegat will support researchers’ opportunities to communicate their own research, Science Communication will be aimed at private companies, public institutions and non-profit organisations with documented professional experience of designing and executing major communication programmes.

About Science Communication

The Science Communication instrument is open for applications for professional communication of basic research and themes within the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities with a broad social appeal.

Applicants can apply for up to DKK 3 million, and the communication project can be independently defined or form part of a larger communication programme. The project may not be limited to, for example, a specific work or teaching situation, and the principal communication should be freely accessible and easy for everyone to experience.

Funding may be sought for various types of communication format, for example TV and radio productions, podcasts, new science journalism initiatives, festivals, lectures, publications and SoMe productions.

Applicants must have documented professional experience with communication. Furthermore, it is a requirement that the project should involve collaboration with researchers who either directly contribute to the communication or quality-assure the finished production prior to distribution. The researchers involved must as a minimum have a PhD and at the time of the application be affiliated to a Danish or foreign research institution. Private companies and producers may apply for funding for non-commercial communication projects.

About Carlsberg Mindelegat

The Carlsberg Mindelegat instrument is open for applications from researchers for communication of their own research to non-scientific audiences. Applicants may apply for up to DKK 200,000, and the project may be independently defined or form part of a larger programme. The communication formats may be, for example, TV and radio productions, podcasts, written productions, lectures and publications.

In order to be considered for funding, applicants must as a minimum have a PhD and be affiliated to a Danish research institution. It is also a requirement that the project involves collaboration with experts with documented experience of communication, journalism or media production.

The communication must be freely accessible and easy for everyone to experience.

Calls for applications to Carlsberg Mindelegat and Science Communication are issued twice a year: on 1 June and on 1 December.
