Purpose
Semper Ardens Advance grants are five-year grants to support visionary research projects at the highest international level aiming at scientific breakthroughs. Projects venturing into new scientific territory and interdisciplinary projects will be prioritised.
Who?
It is possible to apply as a single applicant (PI) or as a team of co-PIs. All applicants, whether PIs or co-PIs, must be tenured internationally recognised professors at a Danish research institution and must dedicate at least 50% of their research time to the project.
Other group members may be based at a Danish research institution or abroad; however, the majority of the work must be carried out in Denmark.
In the case of a co-PI team, there will still be one main applicant, who will be responsible for the application and, should this be successful, the grant.
What?
The total amount applied for must be within a budget of DKK 10–20 million.
Grants for this instrument are given as a framework grant and may be used to cover expenses that are relevant and necessary for completing the activity. The following running costs may be applied for:
- Consumables
- Equipment
- Travel, conferences and similar
The budget may include the following salary items:
- Salaries for postdocs
- Salaries and tuition fees for PhD students (enrolment of the PhD students at a Danish PhD graduate school must be guaranteed)
- Salary for a project coordinator for up to 12 months during the project period
- Salary for research assistants
- Up to a total of three months’ salary for the main applicant
If applying as a co-PI team, the main applicant may transfer the three months' salary to another co-PI. However, this must be specified and justified in the application.

FAQ
The Carlsberg Foundation only supports scientific activities with a strong connection to Danish research, as specified in the Charter of the Foundation, Sect. 9.1. The board of the Carlsberg Foundation interprets this to mean that the applicant may, for example:
- hold a degree from a Danish research institute and subsequently have been employed at a Danish research institute; or
- through personal or family relations be strongly connected to Danish research; or
- possess so strong and demonstrated ties to Danish research that even if the applicant moves abroad to conduct research, e.g., in connection with an internationalization fellowship, the applicant intends to return to Danish research upon the completion of their stay.
These examples are not exhaustive. It is ultimately up to the board of the Carlsberg Foundation to decide whether a connection is considered strong or not.
